Last week marked a significant shift in the issuance of permits for new shale well drilling across the Marcellus and Utica regions, suggesting a return to stability in this sector. Just two weeks prior, we reported an astonishingly low figure—only one new permit was granted during that period (see M-U Issues Just One New Permit Last Week, Dec 29 – Jan 4). In our commitment to accuracy, we took the extra step to confirm whether there had been any delay in the reporting of new permits by the relevant environmental agencies. Our findings reinforced that only that solitary permit had been issued. However, looking at the week from January 5 to January 11, we observed an uptick: Pennsylvania alone authorized 12 new permits, while Ohio contributed 2, and West Virginia added 7 to the tally. Notable companies that received new permits last week include Antero, Ascent, CNX, EQT, HG Energy, Repsol, and Seneca Resources.
