Augmented reality (AR) is revolutionizing the way we experience art, and Atlanta is at the forefront of this digital transformation. The Altera Art: ATL tour showcases eight murals across the city, each with an invisible second life that only a smartphone camera can reveal. This innovative project, led by AI-focused media company Altera, blends technology with traditional art to create a unique and immersive experience.
One of the stops on the tour is the Edgewood Avenue bridge, where the mural 'Edgewood Embers' by Nicki Lynch comes to life. By pointing your phone at the mural, you can add a name to a glowing constellation of ancestors, set to a custom 60 BPM track blending lo-fi hip-hop, gospel, and Latin conga rhythms. This digital sanctuary, as Lynch calls it, transforms the static mural into an interactive and emotional experience.
The tour grew out of a fellowship where 50 people, many with no technical background, learned to use 8th Wall and other generative media tools. The cohort worked closely with the muralists to create eight winning pieces, each with its own AR layer. For example, the 'We're All Mad Here' mural by FoxySwine in Cabbagetown springs to life with a soccer ball-coughing Cheshire cat, predicting the World Cup's winner.
In Inman Park, the 'WE ♥ ATL' mural by YikYak and olive47 gets its own pulse, playing a film called 'Heartbeat' by Dr. Ric Mathis. At Sweet Auburn Trail Stop #12, the 'Women of Auburn' mural by Dana Xavier Dojnik resurrects the Auburn Branch Carnegie Library, Atlanta's first public library for African Americans, which was demolished in 1960. These AR layers not only bring the murals to life but also tell powerful stories and pay homage to Atlanta's history.
The tour's success and impact are evident in the reactions of the participants. Natalia Gonzalez, the founder of Altera, was impressed by the fellows' ability to learn and create functional and stunning pieces with limited time. The project has also received support from the City of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta, Atlanta Tech Hub, and Avant South, with the senior technology advisor to Mayor Andre Dickens presenting the tour's awards.
As the tour runs through July 31, Altera is already planning its next steps. The company is expanding into Altera Media, with more immersive experiences and studio work on the horizon. The 'Women of Auburn' mural, in particular, has left a lasting impression on Gonzalez, as the AR tools helped bring the story of the librarians to life and solidified their place in Atlanta's history. This innovative use of technology in art is not only captivating audiences but also leaving a lasting creative mark on the city.
