Frida Kahlo's Legacy: A Battle for Her Art
Amidst the rising frenzy for Frida Kahlo's paintings, curators at the Tate Modern are facing an intense challenge. With a new exhibition, "Frida: The Making of an Icon," set to open in June, the race is on to secure her iconic works.
But here's where it gets tricky: the exhibition will showcase only 36 of Kahlo's paintings, a far cry from the 50+ artworks displayed in the Tate's previous Kahlo exhibition in 2005. One notable omission is Kahlo's self-portrait, "El sueño (La cama)," which fetched a record-breaking £41.8 million at auction last November.
The Tate is determined to include this masterpiece, but curator Tobias Ostrander has expressed doubts, stating the prospect is "unlikely."
And this is the part most people miss: the Tate's struggles don't end there. Pop icon Madonna, who reportedly owns five Kahlo paintings, including "My Birth" and "El venado herido," has reportedly declined the Tate's request to borrow her collection. Ostrander confirms, "Madonna loaned in 2005 but won't loan now."
Despite these setbacks, the exhibition promises to offer a unique perspective on Kahlo's influence. It will feature works by over 80 artists inspired by Kahlo, shedding light on the phenomenon of "Fridamania" and the commercialization of her image.
Some of Kahlo's most celebrated paintings, such as "Untitled (Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird)" and "Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress," will be on display. These works, created by an artist who lived from 1907 to 1954, have contributed to her posthumous reputation as one of the 20th century's most significant artists.
Kahlo's story gained further traction with the 2002 biopic "Frida," starring Salma Hayek, which focused on Kahlo's life, art, politics, and her complex relationship with her husband, artist Diego Rivera.
Madonna, a self-proclaimed admirer of Kahlo, has publicly shared her thoughts on the artist. In 1990, she declared, "If somebody doesn't like this painting [My Birth], then I know they can't be my friend."
