NHL Round-Up: Matthew Schaefer Edges Closer to History (2026)

Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of NHL hockey! We're about to witness history in the making, and it's all thanks to the incredible talent of Matthew Schaefer, the New York Islanders' young defenseman.

The Rising Star: Matthew Schaefer's Historic Journey

Schaefer, just 18 years old, has already shattered records. He's the rookie defenseman under 20 with the most goals, and now he's closing in on an even bigger achievement. With two more goals against the Panthers, he's only four goals away from surpassing Brian Leetch's record for the most goals ever by a rookie defenseman of any age. That's an incredible feat for someone so young!

But here's where it gets controversial...

Schaefer's impressive performance has the Islanders on a winning streak, with eight victories in their last ten games. His stats this season are impressive: 20 goals and 24 assists in 61 games. And let's not forget his teammate, Anders Lee, who scored the game-winning goal, his 14th of the season, with only 32 seconds left in the final period.

Meanwhile, the Florida Panthers fell to 30-27-3, while the Islanders improved to 35-21-5.

Other NHL Highlights

In other NHL action, the Pittsburgh Penguins shutout the Vegas Golden Knights 5-0. Both teams had 22 shots on net, but it was the Penguins who came out on top. Ben Kindel, also 18, started the scoring with his 15th goal of the season in the first period. The Penguins then dominated the second period with three straight goals, including two power-play goals from Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, both assisted by Erik Karlsson.

With five minutes left, Justin Brazeau added the final tally, and goalie Arturs Silovs recorded his second career shutout. The Penguins improved to 31-15-13, while the Golden Knights fell to 28-18-14 and are awaiting news on star Mark Stone's injury.

The Chicago Blackhawks also had a shutout win, beating the Utah Mammoth 4-0. Goalie Arvid Soderblom, after five long years, finally recorded his first career shutout with 22 saves. Teuvo Teravainen scored two of Chicago's goals, including one on a power play in the first period and another short-handed goal for the final score. It was his first multi-goal game of the season and his first since January 10, 2025. Nick Foligno and Landon Slaggert also scored, improving the Blackhawks' record to 23-28-9, while the Mammoth fell to 31-25-4.

In a thrilling comeback, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-1. After Morgan Barron put the Jets up 1-0 in the first period, Will Smith tied it for San Jose in the third, and then 19-year-old rookie Michael Misa scored the winning goal in overtime. The Sharks improved to 29-25-4, while the Jets dropped to 23-26-10.

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 in a shootout. Cutter Gauthier scored both of the Ducks' regulation goals, with Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson finding the net in the shootout. McTavish is now 5-for-5 in shootout opportunities this season. Joel Farabee and Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames. The Ducks improved to 33-23-3, while the Flames fell to 24-28-7.

Finally, the St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild 3-1. Kirill Kaprizov scored his second goal in three games since the league's return from Olympic play, and teammate Matthew Boldy picked up his 34th assist of the year. St. Louis' Logan Mailloux tied the game 1-1 with his second goal of the season just before the final frame. Pavel Buchnevich and Robert Thomas then scored the final two goals for the Blues, who improved to 22-29-9. The Wild dropped to 36-16-10.
