NI's reliance on oil for heating is particularly high, with almost two-thirds of homes (62.5%) using this fuel source, the highest proportion among UK nations. The impact of rising oil prices is thus felt acutely in this region.
The Consumer Council for Northern Ireland (CCNI) attributes the price rise to the unpredictable nature of crude oil prices due to the ongoing conflict. However, they are monitoring the situation closely.
And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these rising costs extends beyond just heating oil. With Iran warning vessels against passing through its crucial southern waterway, which handles about 20% of the world's oil and gas shipments, the potential for further disruptions is very real.
BBC News NI spoke to residents in Belfast, who shared their concerns. Ben Turner, accepting of various cost increases over time, described this latest rise as "another one to stomach." He worries that rising fuel prices will further strain already tight household budgets.
Natalie, from Glengormley, echoed these sentiments, stating that the rise in home heating oil costs adds "a lot of pressure" to households, especially with the general cost of living on the rise.
Kenneth McClernon, on the other hand, expressed concern about potential increases in car fuel prices, suggesting that walking might be a more economical option.
Barbara Foster from Portstewart offered a more hopeful perspective, urging consumers to "hope for the best" and anticipating more stability by autumn.
Motoring journalist Ian Lynas from Portadown shared his concerns about the longevity of the issue, stating that rising oil prices will impact everyone, from small business owners to shopkeepers.
Lynas himself experienced a significant price increase, paying £415 for 500 litres of home heating oil on Monday, compared to £309 on Friday.
So, what can consumers do to navigate these challenging times? The CCNI advises against settling for the first quote and recommends bulk purchases. Joining heating oil buying groups, where communities negotiate better rates by pooling orders, is another strategy. The NI Housing Executive's oil savings network and the NI Oil Federation's pre-payment scheme are also options to consider.
Fuel stamps, which allow residents to budget and spread costs by purchasing stamps from local retailers, provide another avenue for managing expenses.
The reasons for the substantial increase in heating oil prices, however, remain unclear. Given that heating oil companies are not regulated, they are under no obligation to explain their pricing strategies.
As consumers, the advice remains the same: shop around and explore all available options to mitigate the impact of these rising costs.
